Twee jaar geleden werden de Webrichtlijnen van de overheid bij ministerbesluit verplichte kost voor alle websites van onze rijksoverheid. Deze richtlijnen waren opgesteld in opdracht van het Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties (BZK), met het doel de toegankelijkheid, duurzaamheid, uitwisselbaarheid, onderhoudbaarheid en vindbaarheid van overheidswebsites te maximaliseren. Nu richt het ministerie haar pijlen op bruikbaarheid (usability) en wil het hiervoor specifieke webrichtlijnen opstellen. Maar gelden voor usability wel regels die zowel universeel als meetbaar zijn? Personal computing begon met een tekstgeoriënteerde interface, waarvan je de commando’s en overige syntax moest leren om de PC te kunnen bedienen. Met Apple en Windows kwam de Graphical User Interface (GUI), waarop commando’s vertaald waren naar menu’s en iconen, die je nog slechts hoefde te herkennen en aanklikken. De nieuwste ontwikkeling is de Natural User Interface (NUI), die directe manipulatie mogelijk maakt. De mogelijkheden van NUI, met name zichtbaar in de Microsoft Surface, spreken erg tot de verbeelding.  In een inspirerende sessie liet August de los Reyes op de afgelopen Mix Essentials 08 de principes zien achter het experience design van de Surface en van NUI. De Nederlandse Spoorwegen hebben sinds vorig jaar een Auto Complete functie opgenomen, in hun online reisplanner. Een leuk idee, maar oh wat jammer van de uitvoering.

So far, none of the talks I attended on AJAX and RIAs (Rich Internet Applications) ever got past “What is AJAX?” and showcasing one or two examples. Luckily, today’s full-day workshop on the first day of the UI11 Conference in Boston covered that within the hour and went ahead. (more…)

Tomorrow, the User Interface 11 Conference kicks off. I have already checked in and strolled through Boston, where I enjoyed my lunch in the one and only Cheers pub.

During the next days, I’ll do my best to share my experiences from the conference. I had already put together my personal conference program and I’m still planning to stick to it.

Today, my colleagues Annelies, Gert, Pascal and I attended the annual conference of SIGCHI.nl, who seized the opportunity to announce its new name: Chi Nederland.

The conference was held in the beautiful Tuschinski theater in Amsterdam. This year’s theme: “The Web and Beyond” (or in short: Web 2.0*). An impressive 650 (roughly) people were present, a record for this conference. (more…)
